Unlike many desert destinations that become unbearable in certain months, the Agafay Desert — located just 40 minutes from Marrakech — is accessible all twelve months of the year. That said, temperatures, light conditions, and crowd levels vary considerably between seasons, and each period has its own advantages.
Peak Season: October to April
The most popular time to visit Agafay is during Morocco's cooler months. From October through April, daytime temperatures hover between a pleasant 18 and 25 degrees Celsius, making outdoor activities comfortable throughout the day. Evenings cool down to around 8 to 14 degrees, perfect for enjoying a campfire dinner under the stars without overheating.
Within this window, the absolute best months are October, November, March, and April. These transitional months offer warm days, mild evenings, long golden-hour light, and fewer tourists than the December-to-February peak holiday period.
Winter: December to February
Winter brings the coolest temperatures — daytime highs of 18 to 20 degrees and nighttime lows that can drop to 5 or 6 degrees. The air is crisp and clear, which means exceptional visibility of the snow-capped Atlas Mountains. This is prime season for photography, as the light is soft and the contrast between the desert terrain and white mountain peaks is stunning.
Keep in mind that winter evenings are genuinely cold. If you're booking a sunset camel ride and dinner show, bring a warm jacket or fleece. Most excursion providers supply blankets at dinner camps, but extra layers ensure comfort.
Summer: May to September
Summer in the Agafay is hot — daytime temperatures regularly reach 38 to 42 degrees Celsius between June and August. Midday activities become uncomfortable, and the sun is intense. However, summer is far from off-limits if you time your visit correctly.
The key to a summer excursion is scheduling around the heat. Late-afternoon and sunset excursions work beautifully: temperatures drop significantly after 5pm, and the desert light becomes spectacularly warm and dramatic. Sunrise vs Sunset: Which Is Better?
Both offer incredible experiences, but they feel very different:
- Sunrise excursions (departing ~6am): Cooler temperatures, softer light, fewer groups, and a meditative calm over the desert. Best for photography enthusiasts and travellers who prefer quieter experiences. The Atlas Mountains glow pink and orange at dawn.
- Sunset excursions (departing ~3-4pm): The most popular option for good reason. Warm golden light, dramatic skies, and the opportunity to stay for dinner under the stars. The transition from daylight to twilight to night sky creates a multi-act experience. Most of our Agafay excursion packages are built around sunset timing.
Rainfall: What to Expect
Rain in the Agafay region is rare but not impossible. The area receives an average of 20 to 30 rain days per year, mostly concentrated between November and March. Showers tend to be brief, and the desert dries quickly thanks to the arid climate and fast-draining soil. Overcast days actually produce beautiful moody lighting for photography, and the air feels refreshingly clean after rain.
Excursions almost never get cancelled due to weather. In the rare event of heavy rain, providers may adjust timing slightly, but the experience itself remains excellent.
What Changes by Season
- Light quality: Winter and spring offer the softest, most golden light. Summer light is harsher midday but stunning at sunset.
- Crowds: December to January and Easter week are busiest. September and early October are quietest.
- Pricing: Some providers offer slight discounts during summer months (June-August) due to lower demand. Peak holiday weeks (Christmas, New Year) may carry supplements.
- Vegetation: After winter rains, the desert shows surprising patches of green — a beautiful contrast against the stone terrain. By late summer, everything returns to golden brown.
