Without question the easiest approach: book one of our Agafay excursions, which includes a vehicle and driver picking you up from your hotel, riad, or apartment in Marrakech at a pre-agreed time. You do not need to navigate, negotiate, or plan any transport yourself. Your driver knows the best routes, avoids the congested medina exits, and delivers you to the activity zone with time to spare. At the end of the excursion, the same driver brings you back. For families, couples, and groups — especially first-time visitors to Morocco — this is overwhelmingly the most sensible and popular choice.
Option 2: Private Taxi
Hail or book a petit taxi (city cab) or grand taxi (shared long-distance taxi) from Jemaa el-Fna or your neighbourhood. For an exclusive private journey to the Agafay area, negotiate a fixed price with the driver before setting off — expect to pay 150 to 200 Moroccan Dirhams (approximately €15–€20) one way. Grand taxis (larger Mercedes saloons, usually cream-coloured) are more commonly used for out-of-town journeys. Show your driver the camp name on your phone in French or Darija script if possible. Arrange a return pickup in advance — taxis are scarce in the desert itself.

Marrakech has plenty of car hire options at the airport and in Gueliz. From the city centre, take the N9 south, join Boulevard Mohammed VI (the outer ring road), and continue southwest towards Douar Lahna and the Agafay area. GPS coordinates 31.45°N, 8.05°W will get you close to the main activity zone; from there follow signage to your specific camp. The road is tarmac almost the entire way with only a short gravel section at the end. A standard hatchback handles the route fine; an SUV is more comfortable on the final approach to remote camps.
Option 4: Motorbike or Scooter
Motorbike and scooter rental is popular in Marrakech, and the road to Agafay is smooth and well-suited to two-wheeled travel. You get complete flexibility — stop for photographs, choose your own pace, and explore back tracks if you are confident. Download an offline map before setting off as mobile signal can be patchy on the plateau. Wear a helmet, apply sunscreen, and carry water — there are no petrol stations once you pass the outer ring road. Allow extra time if you are new to Moroccan traffic, which can be unpredictable within the city limits.
The Route: What to Expect
The road from Marrakech to Agafay passes through the southern suburbs, gradually giving way to small agricultural villages and open countryside. Around 15 kilometres out, the landscape begins to open noticeably — flat rocky terrain stretches ahead with the Atlas range growing on the horizon. The transition from city to desert is gradual and genuinely beautiful, particularly in the late afternoon light. Total distance from Jemaa el-Fna is 38 to 42 kilometres depending on your destination; from the airport approximately 28 kilometres; from Gueliz around 33 kilometres.

Practical Tips for a Smooth Journey
Download offline maps before leaving Marrakech — mobile data is intermittent in parts of the desert. Leave at least 15 minutes of buffer before any scheduled activity. In summer, bring extra water even for the drive — desert heat dehydrates faster than you expect. For return journeys after dark, keep a charged phone and a contact number for your driver or camp.
