The desert is 35 to 42 kilometres southwest of Marrakech — about 45 minutes by road. You can get there by private taxi (150–200 MAD one way from Jemaa el-Fna), rental car, or motorbike. The main road is tarmac and straightforward to follow using a GPS app. Independent access is perfectly feasible, though you will need to plan more carefully than you would if joining a guided excursion with hotel pickup included.
