What Is a Desert Dinner Show?
A desert dinner show is an outdoor dining and entertainment event held at a camp in the Agafay Desert, approximately 45 minutes from Marrakech. Guests arrive by private transfer from their hotel, are welcomed with sweet Moroccan mint tea at the entrance, and are led to cushioned seating around low traditional tables inside a large Berber-style tent or under a canopy open to the night sky. Over the course of two to three hours, they enjoy a multi-course feast while Moroccan musicians, dancers, and performers take turns on a central stage. It is simultaneously a meal, a cultural experience, and a show — all delivered in one of the most atmospheric settings imaginable.
The Food — A Traditional Moroccan Feast
The meal begins with starters: a bowl of harira (a rich lentil and tomato soup seasoned with cumin and coriander), mixed Moroccan salads including zaalouk (smoky aubergine dip) and taktouka (roasted pepper and tomato), and crispy briouat pastries filled with spiced meat or cheese. Mains centre on a choice of tagine — classic chicken with preserved lemon and olives, slow-cooked lamb with prunes and almonds, or a hearty vegetable option — alongside mechoui (ceremonially presented whole roasted lamb on special evenings) and couscous with seven vegetables. Dessert brings chebakia (sesame cookies dipped in honey), orange slices with cinnamon, and fresh fruit. Everything is washed down with fresh-pressed orange juice and ceremonial mint tea poured from height into small glasses — a gesture of welcome and hospitality that is as theatrical as anything on stage.

Entertainment runs throughout the meal, evolving in style and energy as the evening progresses. It typically opens with Gnawa musicians — a distinctive hypnotic rhythm using metal castanets and a bass lute called the guembri — that sets an immediately Moroccan atmosphere. This is followed by belly dancing, solo and group, with flowing costumes and skilled technique that draws guests into the performance. Fire eaters and jugglers bring bursts of intensity between the gentler acts, and the evening often closes with a collective drum performance or group dance that invites guests to join in. The overall arc moves from ambient background music during the meal to full performance as the courses progress — a well-judged format that entertains without overwhelming.

The Agafay Desert has minimal light pollution, which means the sky above the camp on clear evenings is thick with stars. The lantern-lit interior of the Berber tent, the scent of burning wood from the fire pit, the warm evening air, and the distant silhouettes of the Atlas Mountains all contribute to an atmosphere that is impossible to replicate indoors. Arriving before sunset — as most of our packages allow — adds the bonus of watching the desert sky shift through gold, amber, and deep purple as darkness falls over the plateau.
What to Wear and When to Arrive
Smart casual is appropriate — there is no strict dress code, but the experience feels enhanced by a slightly dressed-up approach. Evenings in Agafay can be cool, particularly from October to April, so bring a light jacket or wrap. Transfers typically depart from central Marrakech between 3:30pm and 5pm depending on the package, allowing time for a pre-dinner quad or camel ride before the show begins around 7pm. Dinner shows run until approximately 10pm, with return transfers included.
